Specials
Here is a collection of special effects photographs by me. Each photograph is an actual diorama or an
in camera optical composite created by me when I was into special effects, but before the advent of powerful computer
graphics, or at least before I had such power at my disposal.
All the scans presented below are directly from the photographs, no computer
enhancement or touching up has been applied. Select the thumbnail displayed to see the full resolution image.
Landing pad on moon of Endor
A Star Wars VI copy, executed on A2 sized corrugated cardboard, with a cut out photo of
me added to the bottom, then the whole thing was photographed. I've done this one with
lots of alternate foregrounds including an AT-AT, but this is my personal favourite (I'm on the moon!).
Bespin, plus Bespin with figures
Above you see four shots of a painting I did (on A2 card using Acrylics), a copy of Bespin as it appears in a
scene from Star Wars V. Around it is the same scene photographed with some figures in front of it. If you
look carefully at the white building on the right you will notice it's unfinished in the lower left hand
picture. This is because I couldn't wait to finish the painting before I used it as
a backdrop. The colours are different due to lighting I used when I took the shots.
F14 and the Nimitz
I used to make model kits, here is an F14 (1:144 scale) flying by the Nimitz (1:720 scale). The F14 is suspended
by thin cotton matched to the background colour of the sky and this technique has worked very well in
this shot with the wire being completely invisible.
Airwolf
I was a big fan of Airwolf, so I took this picture of the Lady. Actually I have many more but
they are still highly classified.
Shuttle
An STS take off photographed with an ERTL shuttle toy. A long exposure was used and a simple
bulb was moved up and down to expose the film repeatedly in the appropriate place to create the flames
of the shuttle engines and boosters.
