Speech Recognition

If you have the Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine installed then this page supports the spoken word. Furthermore if you have a Microsoft Agent and a text-to-speech engine installed you may interact with this page by talking to it and hearing the replies. Eventually this entire site will support the spoken word, once the technology is widely available and accurate enough.

The above links go directly to Microsoft sites, who occasionally change pages, so if they're not available check out the Microsoft site directly.

Here's what you'll need to use the speech facilities:

  1. Windows® 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 (x86)
  2. Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later
  3. A Pentium 100 MHz PC (or faster)
  4. At least 16 MB of RAM
  5. At least 661K free disk space for the Microsoft Agent components, 3.1 MB for Peedy and an additional 1.34 MB for the L&H TruVoice Text-To-Speech engine
  6. A Windows-compatible sound card
  7. A compatible set of speakers and microphone (recommended)

Even after you have all this installed you need to ensure everything is setup correctly otherwise it still will not work. I am afraid it is still early days as far as this technology goes, shame really, but things should improve soon (I hope).
