Picture of the Month - The Best Art & Photography |
Sunset - March 2021 |
Actually an old shot I rediscoverd, originally taken way back in 2005 on my trusty Minolta 7D |
Greenback 2 - March 2020 |
Another cropped zoom of a Nikon S7000 macro shot |
Greenback - July 2019 |
Taken with my current favourite camera, my Nikon S7000, a cropped zoom of a great macro shot of a fly as it is about to jump off a leaf |
![]() Snowfall - January 2019 |
Early snowfall in Southgate, with massive snowflakes. |
Lightning - July 2018 |
We don't often get a chance to capture lightning but I had recently bought a Nikon Coolpix S7000 so I had to try it out. |
![]() Dawn on the M4 - Panorama - June 2018 |
Originally taken February 2008 with my (then new) Canon SX100, I finally got round to making a panorama of this beautiful sunrise over a lake next to the M4 motorway. |
Bluebells - May 2018 |
More beautiful bluebells in Chorley Wood, originally taken as multiple photos in 2007 using my trusty Minolta 7D, finally completed as a panorama |
Icescape - March 2014 |
What strange landscape is this, taken from a plane over a frozen forest perhaps, or is it the bonnet (hood in American) of my car on a windy frozen morning, here's a clue, no plane was used to take this photo - nature is even more amazing in closeup |
Magnification - February 2014 |
The small drops of rain on this leaf acted like a magnifying glass, beautiful |
Icy Morning In Park - January 2013 |
Taken on my way to work with, it was icy so I had my A55v SLT, there's a dream like quality to this, plus using an SLT one can shoot directly into the Sun without worrying about ones eyes being burned! |
Taxi In Motion - November 2012 |
A London Taxi, taken with a slow shutter while panning with the vehicle, it was moving towards then away from me, hence the interesting affect of the front and back, with only the middle of the vehicle not distorted as this is what I focused on, very arty and enjoyable so I did a whole series of these |
![]() Katerina - April 2011 |
Katy having her first bath 3 days after her baptism, with her Godmother Christina and her mum |
Moon - January 2011 |
Playing with my new Sony A55v I took this photo of the Moon, the camera does a lovely job, especially as this was hand-held |
![]() Bluebells - May 2010 |
An old Bluebell photo of mine given a new treatment with a fantasy style diffuse glow |
![]() Moon and Plane - January 2010 |
I was trying to get some good telephoto shots of the moon when this 747 flew into my shot, great outcome I think |
![]() Leonidas - July 2009 |
Cheeky little thing |
Linlithgow Palace - January 2009 |
A palace in Scotland, seen from over the loch |
![]() Wing Chun Punch - November 2008 |
A straight punch over a neat trap, simple but effective |
![]() Tube sign and Big Ben - October 2008 |
An iconic night time view of an Underground/Tube sign and the Clock Tower at Westminster |
Santorini - August 2008 |
Everywhere you look the place is filled with photo opportunities, I like the boat on the roof mirroring the one in the water |
Urban Abstract - July 2008 |
This urban abstract is a bus and tube station viewed in reflection of a vandalised shop window, pointless destruction but I got some interesting images out of it |
Baby Robin - June 2008 |
A local robin nested near our kitchen door, and two babies were the result, this is the second before it could fly |
Flower and actual snow - April 2008 |
6th April 2008 and we had a heavy snow fall here in North London, with beautiful, if short lived results |
![]() Canon SX100 First Outing - February 2008 |
My first outing with my shiny new Canon SX100, on the way to work down the M4 I spotted this scene so stopped and with cars and lorries flying by a 70mph just feet away I hand held this shot of water near Junction 8/9. Shot at ISO400 with F3.5 and 1/8th second and -2/3EV the image stabilisation doing a very good job along with my steady hand (not withstanding the trucks) I think it turned out quite decent. To finish it off, this version has some dodging applied to the lower (darker) half to bring out the fence |
![]() Morning Mist - November 2007 |
I really could have done with a person coming round the path by the tree, but even so the rays of light, exposed with an ND grad to balance the sky make this a pleasing shot |
![]() Spider and Cranefly - September 2007 |
It was a very windy day with quickly changing light conditions, bad conditions for macro shooting but the scene which confronted me just required to be shot, so I ramped my 7D up to ISO1600 kept the aperture as open as possible for a fast shutter speed but closed for more depth of field given the movement in the scene and managed to grab a few amazing shots of this spider trapping this cranefly, really amazing. The cranefly struggled desperately to get free and managed to get its wings and all but two of its legs free in a mamouth 30 minute struggle, but its fate was sealed as the spider crawled all over its captive trapping it in a web |
![]() Dandelion Snow and Thistle - August 2007 |
August 2007 was a bit of a damp squib as far as summer went in the UK, but I did some lovely shots of dandelion clocks caught on thistles |
![]() P-51D Mustang - July 2007 |
By the end of the day at Flying Legends 2007 (Duxford), I had really got the hang of panning and framing so I tried something more dramatic with this one, taken at 1/200th of a sec and panned as the Mustang literally screamed overhead, I love this shot, with the plane in the top right as if it's about to zoom out of the frame, and it is very sharp too, best shot of the day I think. To see more of these see Events - Other - Flying Legends 2007 |
![]() Poppy Field - June 2007 |
After seeing some wilting poppies the year before I returned to the same field in Redbourn in June 2007 to find a beautiful field of poppies, a fabulous site, if only there had been a blue sky that day it would have been perfect |
![]() Bluebells - April 2007 |
I waited patiently during the winter months researching the best places to find bluebells, here is a small wood near Chorleywood with a beautiful carpet of bluebells. I took over 100 shots including macros and wide panoramas but I really like this square view of the forest made from 2 joined, portrait shots |
![]() Sopwith Camels on Patrol - February 2007 |
One of my aircraft series (see Art, Fantasy and Technology), this one is an artistic rendition of a pair of Camels on patrol, the full colour image was tinted and cropped to give it an authentic early 1900s feel. The aircraft are actually the same one photographed at the RAF Museum Hendon |
![]() Lily - January 2007 |
I actually bought this Lily specifically for photography, I took a variety of shots, this close-up, with tweaked colour curves is quite abstract and interesting I think |
![]() Foggy morning on the Lee - December 2006 |
It was a cold and foggy London morning, I set out early to get some good fog photos but did not expect to find this almost completely sunken boat on the Lee, I took a lot of photos of it, this one a 4 element panoramic. I have not colour corrected this photo as my Minolta 7D captured the scene exactly as I remember it, playing with levels and curves does give a clearer picture but spoils the reality of the misting |
![]() P51 Flying - November 2006 |
I visited RAF Hendon and took a two part panoramic of this P-51 Mustang, I had to do it in 2 parts because from the position I needed to get the perspective I wanted, my 35-105 lens could not capture the whole plane. The clouds were taken at the far end of my 70-210 from my back garden, composed to make it look like they were taken from the air. Photoshop and a lot of work are responsible for this image, the under carriage was down so I had to paint in out using mostly the clone tool, the props were cut out onto their own level, the plane filled in and the props radially blurred to make them move - a worthwhile result I think, and 24MPixels in original form too. If you like this sort of image look at the photography of Philip Makanna. To see information on how I created this image look here |
![]() Autumn Cherry - September 2006 |
Autumn 2006 approaches, the leaves are getting brown and cherries fall to the ground. I love the browns in this scene, with a slight splash of green and that radiant red |
![]() Dragon Fly - August 2006 |
Taken in the scorching 40 celcius heat of an early Cyprus afternoon at the archeological site in Pafos, my wife had to wait 20 minutes for me as I watched and closed in on this beast before I managed to catch a really good shot of it with my little Canon Ixus 500 |
![]() Moorhen Chick - July 2006 |
I came across a Moorhen chick basking in the sunshine. Fortunately I had my 75-300 with a 1.4x teleconverter so I managed to get some very closeup images. It helped that being young it had not learned to fear humans yet so I managed to get within a few yards of it anyhow, I took about 100 shots of this ultra cute chick, here is one of my personal favourites |
![]() Lizard - June 2006 |
In the dark, humid and hot lizard house at Paradise Wildlife Park the animals moved much slower but one needs a longer exposure, by the time I had got this shot I was wiping my forehead to prevent moisture dripping on the camera - a very camera hostile environment, but the lizard posed so how could I refuse the shot |
![]() Tulips - May 2006 |
While walking to my local park I saw these tulips posing for a photo which seems more like art. It was an overcast day so I set the white balance on my 7D to make the most of the colours, I have also played with the colours on my computer, perhaps I over did it :) |
![]() Water Lilies - April 2006 |
In the early 1900's Claude Monet did some truly lucious oil paintings of water lilies, I also did an oil on this subject and here is a photo taken with my 7D of some lovely lilies in the style of Monet, but taken in the UK not France. This shot is about equal measure of art and photography |
![]() Robin - December 2005 |
A festive photo of a Robin, if only there was snow this would have been perfect. This was taken with my 7D and cheap 75-300 lens, not a bad job I think |
![]() Rio - August 2005 |
From Corcovado one gets great view of the whole of Rio, including Sugar Loaf, here in a massive 5 element panoramic ade with my Canon Ixus 500 |
![]() Ladybirds - May 2005 |
One of first pictures taken with my new Minolta 7D and shows what an amazing camera it is |
![]() Headcase - November 2004 |
Created by photographing the bookcase, and serveral shots of my head in different positions and compositing them together, along with a bit of manually added shadow |
![]() Frosty Leaves - November 2003 |
Taken in macro mode with my Nikon Coolpix 3100 on a cold and frosty November morning, I had to adjust the camera exposure to ensure sufficient darks and lights |
